What Is HME Billing Software?

HME billing software is the system a home medical equipment provider uses to turn a referral into a paid claim, and then to keep getting paid for as long as the patient uses the equipment. It tracks the Standard Written Order, the face-to-face note and the prior authorization, captures proof of delivery in the home, bills the rental month with the right modifier, schedules resupply, posts the remittance, and works the denial when a payer says no.

Home medical equipment is a rental and resupply business more than a sales business. An oxygen concentrator bills for 36 months. A CPAP bills as a capped rental for 13 months and then ships masks and tubing on a schedule for years. A hospital bed may convert from rental to purchase. Each of those cycles has its own payer rules, and each one is a denial waiting to happen if the documentation lapses or the month count is wrong.
